For those living at the ends of the world, being able to watch television is made available using Direct TV satellite service. Those who want high-speed access to the internet have basically been out of luck, until the availability of Direct Satellite TV and internet became available. Their only previous choice was through a dial-up connection.

The Direct Satellite TV and internet services, now offered through HughesNet, require separate satellite dishes as the high-speed internet access requires a separate dish. Professional installation of the system, including the satellite dish and computer connection, is available as part of the standard equipment purchase price. Once installed you will be charged for the service, depending on the level or service you choose.

Charges for Direct Satellite TV and internet connection will be billed separately with DirecTV billing for Direct Satellite TV and internet services billed by HughesNet. The advantages to a satellite internet connection are the speeds available, as well as allowing high-speed access to areas where a cable connection or a digital subscriber line (DSL) cannot be connected by the phone company. Without a satellite internet, a dial up connection in the only choice.

Satellite Internet Offers Faster Connections

If you download many programs from the internet with a dial-up connection, then you know the frustration of waiting what seems like an interminable amount of time for the download to finish. A typical four-megabyte audio file, the average size of a single song, can take up to 10 minutes through dial-up. With Direct Satellite TV and internet connection speeds that same song, at the slowest rate of service offered would take approximately 47 seconds. With the pro level of service, that drops to about 22 seconds.

Huge software download speeds are also severely slowed by dial-up services and an average 25 megabyte software upgrade file can take as long as and hour and a half to download while through high speed it will take under 10 minutes with a Direct Satellite TV and internet connection from HughesNet.

One disadvantage of the Direct Satellite TV and internet connections would be in the use of VoIP telephone services. Even though you would have a high speed connection to use voice over internet protocol for phone service, when used with a satellite internet connection, the speed of the internet is slowed. To combat that, you could disable the phone service while downloading.

Satellite Television Programming Providers

There are two major satellite television providers in America, DirecTV and Dish Network; each satellite programming package may differ between the providers, but many of the same channels will be offered by both.

Satellite TV programming packages are the channels included for one set fee per month or billing cycle, this programming usually will not change except by the customers request.

Packages Offerings

There are three basic types of packages; one which will include basic channels plus some extended channels too, another will include all in the first plus premium movie channels, and the third will include the first two with an extra premium feature added such as DVR, HD, or sports packages.

The price will generally rise as the number of channels increases, and the number of televisions to receive the programming; for each television to receive satellite programming it must have its own receiver to decode the satellite signal, and deliver the satellite television programming to the set.

The Basics

Basic and Extended satellite TV programming packages will often include the familiar cable channels such as Discovery Channel, SPIKE, Animal Planet, and others including the local broadcasting networks.

Dish Network allows its customers to purchase even further specialized packages to lower costs and specify needs for their customers such as packages for families or the customer may choose to select the most popular channels in groups of 60 up to and including all the channels.

DirecTV's offering of basic satellite television programming includes all the most sought channels in the country plus premium music channels for digital music listening from a home entertainment center.

Movie Channels

Satellite TV programming packages which include movie channels will often offer specials which include HBO, Stars, Cinemax, Showtime, and Encore. Encore is often a free set of premium movie channels given with their extended package, the other premium channels can be offered as both packages and ala carte.

Extras

Satellite television programming never is short of extras to offer their customers; with features like digital video recording (DVR), high definition programming (HD), and the various satellite only sporting events available, a television aficionado is sure to find several channels to their liking.

Satellite television is often a great value and of great quality, the customer service and technical support offer by both major company is usually competitive with others within their industry. Customers are important to satellite television programming providers above most other businesses because they truly would not be in business without their customers.

What Is Satellite TV?

There are two types satellite TV systems available on the market in North America nowadays: an older big dish system and a direct to home system. These two types can be distinguished mainly by the size of the antenna. Big dish systems need an antenna that varies between six and ten feet in diameter, while direct to home systems only require an eighteen to twenty inches antenna.

The United States satellite "footprint" overlaps into Canada. Therefore, Canadian consumers are easy and often willing targets for pirate satellite TV companies, who sell US satellite dishes, receivers and access cards.

The Effects of Pirate Satellite TV

Pirate satellite TV has a negative impact on a wide area of the entertainment industry. It deprives cable and satellite companies, intellectual property owners, program providers and many other people involved in the motion picture industry of part of their rightful revenues.

There is an estimation that Canada loses at least one billion dollars as a direct effect of pirate satellite TV. This estimation is a result of the information provided by the satellite and cable companies in Canada, the Internet publications of the gray market and the information supplied by some video retailers.

Pirate Satellite TV Is a Criminal Offense

Both the Canadian Radio-communication Act and the Canadian Criminal Code state that pirate satellite TV is a criminal offense. Sections 326 and 327 of the Criminal Code state that stealing a telecommunication service or possessing, manufacturing, selling, offering for sale or distributing a device that steals a telecommunication service is a criminal offense.

The Radio-communication Act also states in Section 9(1)(c) that decoding an encrypted subscription programming service without an authorization is an offense. Section 10(1)(a) states that manufacturing, importing, distributing, leasing, offering for sale, selling, installing, modifying, operating or possessing any device that decodes an encrypting subscription programming service without an authorization is a criminal offense.

The Supreme Court of Canada has adopted a resolution in April 26, 2002, that confirmed the fact that Canadian residents are forbidden to decode any encrypted satellite programming without an authorization acquired from a retailer that holds the necessary legal rights in Canada. In other words, if you have a satellite TV system and are not a subscriber to a legitimate company, you might be breaking the law.

Legal Sanctions

Those who are convicted for involving in pirate satellite TV acts must pay a heavy price as well. If someone is found manufacturing, distributing, selling or modifying a device to pirate satellite TV, he/she may be convicted to an up to $5000 fine per count or even to prison. The devices that they've been making or selling are forfeited or destroyed.

For further information on pirate satellite TV and the way it is punished, you can contact the CMPDA Anti-Piracy Operations. All calls received are strictly confidential.

You can argue all day on which satellite TV service is the best but it's all an opinion. It all depends on how much money you are willing to spend on TV's and a satellite service. Certain packages you buy will require a more high definition TV so you may receive all of the channels they provide. There are many different combinations of satellite TV services but we will go through all the basic packages and not the add-ons to save some time.

This in depth guide will show you which service you should pick based on what channels and satellite TV services they provide.

Basic cable satellite TV service

This is the most basic service available. It is for analogs TV's and doesn't require a satellite dish or a satellite receiver to transmit to the television. A basic set of antenna can pick up most of the signal but a cable is required for better quality and more channels. This satellite TV service can cost anywhere from 9 dollars a month to 19 for the expanded one. You essentially get about 20 channels with the cheaper service and up to 59 for expanded.

"Cable" TV service

This service delivers its signals to analog TV systems but they still don't get too good of picture quality. You can get over 100 channels with this service and is a great buy if you want to pay 50 dollars a month. These services come with all kinds of great TV channels. Like MTV and VH1. They also include plenty of educational programs like discovery, and the history channel to name a few. This service might require a satellite receiver but no dish is required. Excellent bargain with the movie channels and on demand movies that they come with.

Satellite TV service

This is the mega package of the satellite TV services. You can get thousands of channels with this package that you will never watch the same thing ever twice! This package has at least 10 of every sports channel and hundreds of movie channels like HBO, Cinemax, and stars. This service requires a satellite dish and a receiver.

HDTV satellite service

This is a fairly new service to be included in the satellite services list. It is the highest quality TV service available to man kind. A special TV's are required to view these channels and are not accessible through analog ones.

There are basically two different methods of broadcasting a television show or movie over a fast spread of land. There is analog, the old school way of doing things. And there is digital, the newer better way of doing things. The difference in these two different methods is resolution, which is the quality of the display on a TV when a broadcast is being played through it.

If you continue to read you will see the differences in each of the services and why digital is better than analog, and a lot of the pros of digital.

What is analog satellite TV?

Analog satellite TV is basically the first form of television there was. It's the basic form of transmitting the broadcasted signal to the television at a low quality because of the way pixels were spread across it. An analog television houses fewer pixels than a digital one causing it to have a smaller resolution. An antenna was the first thing used to get the broadcasted signal to the television. The lowest quality of digital television screens is still better resolution than that of the analog television.

What is digital satellite TV?

Digital satellite TV is basically the newer, improved, and better form of television in comparison to the old ways of the analog. Digital screens, which computers utilized first, house a greater number of pixels therefore causing the resolution to be that much greater. Usually dishes and satellite receivers are needed to get the signal from the digital satellite to the television. The highest grade of these screens is ten times the quality of the worlds best analog television screen when things are being displayed on it.

What are the pros of digital satellite TV?

Well first of all there is the high resolution factor! The HDTV has a better one, but that also costs a lot more money to have. You can buy an extremely cheap screen that is digital and have a better quality screen resolution than your highly expensive analog screen that's a little bigger than the digital one. These TVs allow you access to more channels therefore increasing the capabilities of this excellent device.

There are also cons to the digital satellite TV which include, the main one being if the weather is bad sometimes your signal will be lost in the transmission from the satellite to your satellite dish and receiver (this can be a real pain if you are in the middle a game!).

The image of a satellite floating 7,000 miles above the Earth sending an electronic signal to a dish mounted on or near your house, is a lot to comprehend, but if you live outside the realm of your local cable provider, you either have or considered satellite television. With DirecTV, you can receive all the hardware you need including the Direct Satellite TV receiver, which is the must-have end of the satellite TV trail.

Unless your satellite TV system is connected to a Direct Satellite TV receiver, your television will not be able to understand all the signals coming from the satellite. Properly aligned satellite dishes receive scrambled signals from satellite broadcasters and send them to the receiver, which using a special descrambler card, can decipher and split the signal into authorized programming.

The receiver contains a special chip which is programmed by the satellite TV company to decode the signals received for the programming package that users are contracted to receive. The chip can be reprogrammed through the satellite signal to update any programming changes made. The Direct Satellite TV receiver receives all the channels that you receive, but the programming chip only sends out one signal at a time. When you change channels on your receiver, it allows the chosen signal to go through.

Receiver Tracks Use For Billing Purposes

The Direct Satellite TV receiver also keeps track of any per view channels you have viewed and sends that information to the company for billing. Earlier models of the Direct Satellite TV receiver only allowed one channel to be viewed at a time but newer models often have the input for two lines allowing the user to watch one channel while recording another or for viewing two channels at once available with TVs equipped for picture-in-picture viewing.

There are illegal chips on the market that when programmed, allows a person to receive all channels being broadcast by a satellite TV company. The Direct Satellite TV receiver receives a signal periodically that will essentially render the illegal cards useless and they have to be reprogrammed again. Typically, the company will send out this electronic counter measure at least once a week, sometime more, and through communications with the Direct Satellite TV receiver the company can also determine the location of the illegal chips.

Many of the newer Direct Satellite TV receivers have recording capabilities built into them that allows for digital video recording for later viewing and also allows you to pause live TV when you answer the phone, for example, letting you catch up with the program once done with your call.

Bell ExpressVu satellite dishes are no bigger than a frying pan and once they're installed, that's it. They don't need any maintenance or hassle.

Once a family or an individual decides to switch from cable to satellite, they must contact a satellite TV provider. The provider has all of the equipment and dish for ones home. They know exactly how to install a family's satellite system for trouble free service. While it is true that someone can install their own system, it isn't recommended. Trying to install the dish while on a ladder can be tricky. Once the dish is installed, one must point the dish into the correct latitude and longitude for the satellite to begin streaming.

This has to be done while high up on a ladder. If there is any ground item blocking the signal then the dish must be moved. In order to get the best reception available, the owner will have to divide the time between being outside on a ladder with being inside to see how much the dish needs to move to fine tune the system. A satellite TV provider has installers who do this everyday. They are fast, safe, and professional. Before the installer leaves the house, they will check to make sure that the customer is getting all of the channels they paid for, and that the picture is fine tuned to be the best that in can be.

Locating A Satellite TV Provider

Finding a satellite TV provider can be as easy as looking in ones local paper or yellow pages. Many communities have several providers who will work with you. An individual may have to wait for the system to be installed because of the volume of business and lack of extra installers. The wait shouldn't be too long though, maybe a week or so for the house to get done. The actual installation normally only takes about one hour to complete.

If a customer lives in a rural community, there may be only one provider for the entire community. With this model, it may take substantially longer to get a system installed. If an individual cannot find a satellite TV provider, they can call either Dish or Direct TV. They will be very helpful to find an installer that will service the area where one lives. In some remote locations where there isn't any cable, satellite service is the only way to have TV. Even in these places there is always a way to get the system set up and working properly.

Satellite television is a common thing nowadays, especially for the USA and Canada. If you are unfamiliar with it, here is a brief satellite TV guide to put some light on the subject.

The first stop in our satellite TV guide is: How satellite television works?

Satellite television is not a new thing, although the latest technology has made it even sweeter. In general, here is how it all works: the programming is received by an uplink station that transmits it to the satellite; than the satellite relays it back to earth and the transmission is received by satellite dishes. Then the signal is decoded by and received and voila – you are enjoying hundreds of TV channels with superb quality.

The second thing that many consumers are unaware is: What equipment shall I buy in order to watch satellite TV channels?

In general you will need a satellite dish, a received and (may be) a dish motor in case you watch to catch signal from different satellites. If you would like to watch paid channels, you will also need a descrambler that will decrypt the encrypted TV channels. The best scenario is that you contact your local satellite television provider and check what the options are. Most of these companies will provide you with all the equipment you need, free installation and some nice start – up gift offers.

Many consumers think that all satellite programs are aid. That is why we have used the next few lines of our satellite TV guide to bring you some good news.

Not all satellite channels are paid. You can watch over 3000 free satellite channels. You will still need a dish and receiver but you will save the monthly costs of the subscription-based service. The free to air satellite channels include news; movie and sport channels and many people find their amount and quality just enough.

The last stop in our satellite TV guide is to answer the question that you are asking in this very minute: Why do I need satellite television at all?

Well, you do not really need it in terms that you do not really need anything. Satellite television provides better quality than the traditional television broadcasting systems. In addition, with the new HDTV (high definition television) consumers receive even better image and sound quality). There is hundreds of channels available ranging from news and movie channels to specialized channels. Finally satellite television is reliable and it gives you some added value features that the traditional cable or terrestrial television cannot provide you – internet access, satellite radio programs, interactive information about shows, shows schedules, etc.
