Children's audio books can quickly become an indispensable part of your child's library collection. Research shows that audio book sales are on the rise and it's not surprising in light of the on-the-go habits of today's families. Two income families are ever prevalent in our society, leaving children with busy schedules and less time for one on one interaction with parents. This can pose as a dilemma for the parent trying to instill a love of reading in their children. One parenting tip for those with busy schedules is to invest in a few audio books for their child. Many newly published books are also being released as audio books and a wide selection is readily available. They are reasonably priced or free and joining an audio book club can help offset the cost if your child requests that audio books be purchased frequently.

Some Advantages of Audio Books over Traditional Books

The most obvious advantage is time. Since audio books are available in CD format, they are portable and can be listened to in the car making use of otherwise wasted time. They can also be listened to repeatedly, increasing your child's retention of the material in the book. Children's audio books have also been shown to help with reading skills and comprehension. Your child can listen to an audio book while reading along in the printed version. If you choose to utilize this option, be sure to purchase audio books that are labeled as unabridged as the abridged versions have had the text altered at the narrator's discretion.

Audio books can also be more interesting for your child than books that are read by a parent since many are dramatized. They can have mood setting music and unusual voices for individual characters as well as sound effects that most parents do not include while reading to their children. Listening to audio books with your child can be a great way to connect to your child. Be sure to cuddle and make frequent eye contact with your child during the narration just as you would if you were reading a traditional book together. You can also discuss the story with your child. The fact that audio books are easily paused and resumed can be a time saver especially if your children are very small and loose interest quickly.

Where to Get Them

Most public libraries offer a wide selection of audio books for children and adults alike. There are free, downloadable audio books available on the internet and a multitude of stores that sell or rent children's audio books. Audio books are definitely a worthwhile investment in your child's education and development. They can provide hours of family enjoyment and bonding in our fast paced lives.
