Buying a radar detector is not like running to an electronics store to grab a radio. A detector is a complicated piece of electronics, but what's more is the fact if you're buying one, you're relying on it to help you avoid tickets. Not just any make and model can or should do.

With this in mind, it's a good idea to do some research on popular models and features before you run out and grab the first model you see and find out it's about as reliable as picking winning lottery numbers. Some makes and models are better than others, it's a simple fact.

While we won't endorse any makes or models here, we will take a look at some of the major features to consider before making a purchase:

Basic detector type: The choices here are cordless, remote mounted and corded. The corded and cordless types simply refer to how they receive their power. The remote mount is a detector that can be hidden in a car to conceal it from thieves, and in some cases law enforcement.

Laser detection: If you are looking at combination models or even straight laser detectors, bear in mind a single sensor won't offer total protection. It takes two sensors to cover both the front and the back of an automobile, thus, offering more complete protection.

Modes: Detectors that offer city modes are a good idea for those who do a lot of driving in populated areas. The mode simply helps lessen the number of false alarms, preventing the driver from going nuts and throwing the detector out the window!

Voice alerts: These might annoy some drivers, but they're a heck of a lot better than having to read a display screen while driving. They just let a driver know what the detector has detected without forcing the learning of a bunch of different displayed symbols.

There are a number of other features in the many makes and models of detectors on the market today. The best bet before buying is to review the features, reliability reports and prices and choose the best to suit your individual driving habits.
