When satellite TV was first invented you had the right to watch the broadcasts for free because of the broadcaster's right to broadcast them. When the broadcasters where told this they didn't like it very much and decided to take action in order for them to stay in business.

Why it INS'T call free satellite TV

This question is an easy one to answer. It applies the same concept of why food isn't free. For one, it pays the workers who get it to your television set. It keeps the broadcast running so you may watch the shows that they deliver. Also certain signals require a decoder that allows the television to read and understand the scrambled data and allows it to form a picture. In the beginning satellite TV was free because the invention of encrypted signals had not been developed yet.

How to get free satellite TV?

Like I said there are ways to receive free satellite TV (basically cracking the encrypted code) but they are illegal! You yourself can make a home made decoder that will simply emulate the abilities of a regular Broadcasting decoder allowing you to view these encrypted images. This is called pirating! Pirating is illegal because you cost the stations money and they are exuberating more work and energy and not getting the right pay to keep it going. If you are caught doing this you face a law suit by the FCC and the broadcasting service. Free satellite TV is again illegal.

How these signals become available legally

When you have a basic television it comes with the basic code for receiving satellite signals. These signals are your PBS, and any other local channels that may be picked up through the ancient code o the TV but in poor quality because some code is missing. If you notice when you don't have a satellite TV provider a lot of channels will be an image of static. This static is caused by the TV not being able to translate the provider's code. A special attachment to your cable will allow the TV to l earn this code and translate it into motion picture.
