The competition in the video gaming market is heating up. With the introduction of PlayStation 3 in November of 2006, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii has some stiff competition on their hands. With PlayStation 3, Sony wants to dominate the world of game consoles.

In this article, we will compare PlayStation 3 with Nintendo Wii and see, which one offers better features to gamers. Nintendo Wii was introduced as a high end game console and so was PS3. Both game consoles are very different, but some features in both are quite similar. So first let us examine the similarities.

Similarities

PlayStation 3 comes with a very powerful processor, popularly known as the Cell Broadband Engine. Nintendo Wii also has a pretty good processor, which they refer to as Broadway. Both the processors are a serious attempt at providing quality game consoles.

Another point of similarity is their backward compatibility. Both PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii are backward compatible, which means that you can play the games for previous consoles, on the new consoles respectively. Both, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii are "always on." This means that you do not have to be logged on or retrieve important codes to get updates.

The similarities stop here. From here on the differences between these two consoles are vast. When it comes to high tech features, gaming quality, graphics, etc, one can definitely conclude that PlayStation 3 is a sure shot winner.

The Differences

So where does Nintendo Wii lacks behind. Wii is innovative; however, it is not an all-in-one entertainment center, like PlayStation 3. Its wireless controller comes with a Nunchuk attachment and has three-dimensional motion detection feature. What this means is that when you swing a bat in a baseball game on your Nintendo Wii, you literally end up moving the controller, as if, you were actually swinging a bat. For the first few hours this is fun, but eventually the fun wears off. Even kids get put off by the controller after some hours of play.

On top of this the graphics of Nintendo Wii are nothing to write about. PlayStation 3 on the other hand, offers excellent graphics, which are best in video gaming. Furthermore, Wii is incapable of playing standard DVD movies. PS3, on the other hand, comes with a Blu-ray digital disc drive that can also play CDs, DVDs, and SACDs. To beat it all, Wii has no DVR functionality.

The Winner

Therefore, if you look at both these game consoles closely, you will realize that though both are offered as the next best thing, only one of them clears the test. I am sure you have answered PlayStation 3. If Nintendo wants to be in the race, it has got to do better than Wii.
